世界にある言語の数はどれくらいなのだろう。多くの人は「何百も」としか答えられないだろう。ほとんどの人はその名前を１００より多くは挙げることができないだろう。ほとんどの人にとってこの質問に自信を持って答えるのは難しい。世界に数千もの言語があるのは確実である。実際、最近の研究によると今日世界には６０００以上の言語があるということだ。この膨大な数は世界に非常に多様な民族と文化が存在するという事実を反映している。

 How many different languages are there in the world? Many people will just answer"hundreds." Most people will be unable to give the names of more than a hundred. IT is difficult for most people to answer this question with confidence. Certainly, the world has thousands of languages. In fact, recent research shows that there are over six thousand languages in the world today. This huge number reflects the fact that we have a great variety of peoples and cultures in the world.

 残念ながら、中には早いスピードで消滅しつつある言語もある。この問題は「言語消滅」として知られている。世界の多くの人がこのことを極めて不安視している。約１０万人が話さないとその言語は生き残れないだろうということでは、大半の専門家は意見が一致している。残念ながら、今日、世界の言語の５０％が１万人以下の話し手しかいない。また、全体の２５％の言語の話し手は１０００人にも満たない。現在、毎年およそ１０言語ずつが消滅していると専門家は推定している。残念なことに、１つの言語が消滅すると、たいていその文化もともに消滅する。この事実は言語や文化の専門家のみならず、世界中の一般の人にとっても、心配の種となっている。

 Unfortunately, some languages are disappearing at a fast rate. This problem is known as "language death." Many people around the world are extremely worried about it. Most specialists agree that no language can survive unless about 100,000 people speak it. Sadly, 50% of the worlds languages today are spoken by fewer than 10,000 people. And 25% of all languages are spoken by fewer than 1,000. Experts estimate that, at present, about 10 languages disappear every year. Unfortunately, when a language dies, its culture also often dies along with it. This fact is a worry not only for specialists in language and culture, but also for ordinary people around the world.

 一つの言語を失うと、それは我々が住む世界についての多くの重要な知識と理解を失うことを意味する。また、言語と個人の独自性には密接な関係がある。ある社会において、ある言語の話し手の数が減につれて、社会問題が増加することが多い。これこそが、たとえ話し手が少ない言語であっても、なぜ言語を救うことが重要であるかの理由の１つである。ごく最近、ウエールズ語やハワイ語を保護しようとする努力が大成功を収めている。これは正しい方向へ向けた、小さいけれども重要な一歩である。

 When we lose a language, it means we lose a lot of important knowledge and understanding of the world we live in. There is also a close connection between language and personal identity. As the number of people speaking a language in community decreases, there is often an increase in social problems. This is one reason why it is important to save languages even if they only have a few speakers. Quite recently, efforts to save the Welsh and Hawaiian languages have met with good success. This is a small but important step in the right direction.

満州族は中国の統計で、1千万人を超える人口を誇る。しかし、一方で清の時代、長年に渡り、人口の上では圧倒的な少数派でありながら支配者として漢族を含む中国全体に君臨した結果、満州族の文化は中国文化と融合・同化していった。そして、清が滅び、漢族が主体の時代に入ると、その同化速度は加速していくこととなり、多くの固有の文化が失われていった。 

満州語も、そのようにして失われていった文化の一つであり、満州語の話者は満州族の間でも現在では極めて少なく、消滅の危機に瀕する言語の1つである。(wiki/満州語)
